Simple Sugar Cookies
Founders
Sometimes the best cookie is one that doesn't need anything added to it. These simple sugar cookies are buttery, lightly sweet and easy to shape by hand.
There's no need for cookie cutters, icing or decorations. Roll the dough into balls, flatten them slightly and let the oven do the rest. Part of our Bake it Now series.

Ingredients
- ½ cup (125 mL) butter, softened
- ¾ cup (175 mL) granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1½ cups (375 mL) all-purpose flour, spooned into the measuring cup and levelled
- ½ teaspoon (2.5 mL) baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon (1.25 mL) salt
Directions
Prepare the oven and tray
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Bake in batches if needed to leave enough space between cookies.
Mix the dough
In a bowl, beat the butter and sugar until creamy.
Add the egg and mix until combined.
Stir in the flour, baking powder and salt until a soft dough forms.
If the dough is too soft to shape, refrigerate it for 10 minutes.
Shape
Divide the dough into 20 equal portions and roll into balls.
Arrange on the baking sheet, leaving about 2 inches (5 cm) between each.
Flatten each ball slightly with the bottom of a glass or your fingers.
Bake
Bake for approximately 10 minutes, until the edges are just beginning to turn golden and the centres look set, not wet or raw. Allow additional time if needed.
Cool
Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes.
Transfer to a rack. Let the baking sheet cool before adding another batch of dough.
