Simple Rustic Cheese Biscuits
Founders
Warm cheese biscuits are an easy way to make an everyday meal feel a little more special. They’re good alongside soup, stew or a bowl of chili, and they’re just as nice split open while they’re still warm.
This recipe uses familiar ingredients and skips the rolling pin and biscuit cutter. Just mix, drop onto a baking sheet and bake. This recipe is one of our simple Bake it Now series.

Ingredients
- 2 cups (500 mL) all-purpose flour, spooned into the measuring cup and levelled
- 1 tablespoon (15 mL) baking powder
- ½ teaspoon (2.5 mL) salt
- ¼ cup (60 mL) cold butter, cut into small pieces
- 1 cup (250 mL) grated cheddar cheese
- ¾ cup (175 mL) milk, plus a little extra only if needed
Directions
Prepare the oven and tray
Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper rated for this temperature or lightly grease it.
Mix the dry ingredients
In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt.
Work in the butter and cheese
Add the cold butter.
Use your fingertips or a pastry cutter to work it into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Stir in the grated cheddar cheese.
Add the milk
Pour in the milk and stir just until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms. Don't overmix.
If the mixture seems unusually dry, add extra milk 1 teaspoon (5 mL) at a time, stopping as soon as the dough comes together.
Drop and bake
Drop eight equal portions of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between them.
Bake for approximately 15 minutes, or until the biscuits are lightly golden and cooked through, with no wet dough in the centres. Allow additional time if needed.
Rest briefly
Let the biscuits rest on the baking sheet for a few minutes before serving.
