Prep Time

A deeply aromatic, umami-rich dressing built on the nutty warmth of toasted sesame oil, balanced with rice vinegar, soy sauce, and finely grated garlic. Honey softens the edges, and toasted sesame seeds add a satisfying finish. Light, savoury, and endlessly versatile. To make it vegan, substitute the honey with pure maple syrup. To make it gluten-free, substitute the soy sauce with tamari.

Best For

  • Crisp cucumber slices

  • Mixed greens

  • Cold tofu and edamame bowls

Classic Toasted Sesame-Garlic Dressing (Sesame & Oil Base)

Ingredients

  • 1½ tbsp toasted sesame oil

  • 1½ tbsp neutral oil (avocado or canola)

  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar

  • 1 tbsp soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)

  • ½ tsp honey (or maple syrup for vegan)

  • 1 garlic clove, finely grated

  • ½ tsp toasted sesame seeds

Directions

  1. Combine rice vinegar, soy sauce, honey, and finely grated garlic in a small bowl. Whisk together until the honey dissolves.

  2. Slowly drizzle in the toasted sesame oil and neutral oil while whisking to combine.

  3. Stir in the toasted sesame seeds.

  4. Taste and adjust — add more rice vinegar for brightness, soy sauce for depth, or honey for balance.

  5. Use immediately or store in a sealed jar in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Shake well before each use.
